The Palmer House Hilton

palmer house hotel chicago

Originating as a grand wedding gift from Potter Palmer to Bertha Honore Palmer, Palmer House eventually became known as North America’s longest-operating hotel with a notable history of innovation. It was the first hotel to incorporate the light bulb, the telephone, and the vertical steam lift (elevator) as well as being the creator of one of the world’s most adored confection, the brownie. Aside from the upgrade and free buffet, having the staff add my Honors number also let me text the hotel through the Hilton app — a great feature, at least in theory. I always received a response within a few minutes, but several confirmed requests never materialized, such as the robes I ordered and the Valentine's Day welcome I confirmed before arrival.

While I normally wouldn't complain about not receiving an amenity that isn't guaranteed, I was excited about surprising my girlfriend on Valentine's Day, so I was bummed that the spread hadn't arrived as promised. I decided to upgrade to the full buffet, though, which got me access to hot dishes and made-to-order omelets for an extra $8. After checking my name off a list, the host handed me this fun HHonors Gold Member casino chip, which my server promptly collected before instructing me to head straight to the buffet. The hotel offered an array of Crabtree & Evelyn amenities, including soap, shampoo and body lotion, plus a hair dryer and plenty of washcloths and towels. I wasn't a fan of the lighting, though, especially in the bathroom — the lights were fluorescent and a bit too bright, especially during visits in the middle of the night.

With my Honors number attached, I did have access to my usual Diamond benefits, though, which was a very nice surprise! That meant executive-lounge access (or free breakfast downstairs), free Wi-Fi and a modest upgrade. While the hotel was kind enough to add my Honors number to the Hotels.com booking — it never hurts to ask! — I wasn't able to earn Hilton points for the first two nights of my stay. Stanley Turkel was designated as the 2014 and 2015 Historian of the Year by Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

As a result, things tended to get lost in the shuffle, from the lounge coffee machine often being empty to staff requests (or even phone calls from the room) going unanswered. The failed mobile check-in ended up working out in my favor, though, since I then used the chat tool to request an upgrade, landing myself an executive-level king room, free of charge. The hotel offered an upgrade to a Hip & Historic Suite for $100, and wouldn't budge on the price, despite some Hilton properties offering suites to Diamond members without an upgrade charge.

Wi-Fi was available free of charge to Hilton Honors members, or for $12.95 without an account. As a Diamond member, I received premium Wi-Fi for free, which worked well. We ended up moving some of the snacks around to make room on top before noticing the automated sensors, but never ended up getting hit with a charge. Despite receiving confirmation in the app, our "Champagne" and chocolate-covered strawberries weren't in the room as I expected and weren't delivered later in the night. After a couple of follow-ups they finally showed up the next day, but with prosecco, instead of Champagne.

Situated just blocks from the Magnificent Mile and the downtown Chicago Theater District, the wedding gift from Potter Palmer continues to delight the weariest of travelers and the most demanding of hosts. While its hotel rooms are standard upscale fare, the Palmer House’s palatial lobby, conceived as a European drawing room, remains one of the most magnificent in the world. The First Palmer House (1870)On September 26, 1870, the first Palmer House opened for business at State and Quincy Streets. With 225 rooms, its furnishings alone cost $100,000, or half the construction cost. An additional Palmer House was under construction nearby, but both structures were destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire on October 8, 1871.

This year, the hotel will be celebrating the brownie’s 130th anniversary on December 8th, National Brownie Day. In 1893, Bertha Palmer tasked the Palmer House pastry chef Joseph Sehl with a dessert suitable for ladies attending the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. Her request was simple, a cake-like confection that could easily be transported to the fair within a boxed lunch.

Beautiful hotel, couldn’t wait for my granddaughters to see it.

The resulting seven-story, $13 million hotel designed by architect John M. Van Osdel opened on November 8, 1873, marking the start of what became known as the nation’s longest continually operating hotel. However, only 13 days after its grand opening, the Palmer House fell victim to the Great Chicago Fire. Determined to rebuild his hotel, Potter secured a $1.7 million loan–negotiated on his signature alone. On November 8, 1873, the new Palmer House welcomed its first guests, marking the opening of what would become the nation’s longest continually operating hotel.

Bertha Honoré Palmer, 23 years Potter’s junior, was a wealthy socialite who also had a drive to learn and succeed. An introduction by Potter’s former business partner, Marshall Field, sparked a romance—and eventual engagement—between Potter and Bertha that led to perhaps one of the most extravagant wedding gifts of all time – Palmer House. It was a grand Chicago Hotel—one destined to take its place among the most luxurious hotels in Chicago and beyond. Scoring an upgrade to the executive floor made a big difference overall, since we could use the express elevators, but the lounge itself was overwhelmingly crowded, especially toward the end of Sunday breakfast and throughout the evening happy hours. Ultimately, while it's a decent business hotel, if a peaceful getaway is what you're after, Palmer House is not your spot.

Eggsquisite Mornings begin with breakfast

The Palmer House was adorned with garnet-draped chandeliers, Louis Comfort Tiffany masterpieces, and a breathtaking ceiling fresco by French painter Louis Pierre Rigal. The fresco was described by columnist George Will as “a wonderful protest of romance against the everydayness of life.” By the 1920s, the decision was made to erect a new 25-story building. Between 1924 and 1927, the Palmer House was rebuilt on the same site but in stages, so not to lose a single day of operations.

What is there to do at The Palmer House Hilton?

The new Palmer House was once remembered for the fact that 225 silver dollars were imbedded in the checkerboard tile floor of the barber shop. They were put there by William S. Eaton, lessee of the shop, who cashed in on the idea within the next few years. Everyone wanted to see that floor out of sheer curiosity, or to verify that a fool could thus waste his money. As with many luxury hotels, the Palmer House boasted a grand lobby, monumental staircases, bridal suites, dining rooms, ballrooms, a bar, and a barbershop. The Third Palmer House (1925–present)The economic boom and population growth of the 1920s and Chicago’s increasing attractiveness as a convention city led to a perceived shortfall in hotel rooms.

The first, known as The Palmer, was built as a wedding gift from Potter Palmer to his bride Bertha Honorѐ. It opened on September 26, 1871 but incredibly was destroyed by fire thirteen days later in the Great Chicago Fire. Palmer quickly rebuilt the Palmer House which reopened in 1875.

It was advertised as "The World's Only Fire Proof Hotel" and contained a grand lobby, ballrooms, elaborate parlors, bridal suites, cafes and restaurants. The hotel attracted well-to-do permanent residents who enjoyed the spacious quarters, master bedrooms, walk-in closets, multiple bathrooms, housekeeping and porter services. By 1925, Palmer erected a new 25-story hotel which was promoted as the largest hotel in the world. The architects were Holabird & Roche who were well known for their groundbreaking Chicago School of skyscrapers. They also designed the Stevens Hotel, the Cook County Courthouse, the Chicago City Hall and the Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City.

How far is The Palmer House Hilton from the centre of Chicago?

Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America®, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. In recent years the historic Chicago hotel, Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel has undergone a $170 million renovation to ensure that it includes all of the conveniences and comforts our 21st century guests expect while also preserving our significant history. Clearly “the Chicago hotel the world knows best” has positioned itself for the next era in downtown Chicago accommodations–and the next generation of Palmer House Hilton with a hip and historic outlook. Beyond the exquisite libations, Lockwood Bar serves as a portal to an era steeped in elegance and refinement.

Thus, the Palmer Estate decided to raze the Palmer House for a new $20 million rendition on the same site. Designed by the firm Holabird & Roche and built during 1923–25, its twenty-five stories housed 2,268 rooms and for a very short time held the record as the world’s largest hotel. The Palmer House Hotel was long the pinnacle of grandeur and luxury in Chicago and was for decades the hotel of choice for visiting presidents, dignitaries, and businesspeople. The crown jewel in the holdings of department store mogul turned real-estate developer Potter Palmer, it was a wedding present to his wife, Bertha.

The hotel's majesty diminished once the elevator doors opened up, leaving us in a long hallway that felt anything but hip. Next, I attempted to use Hilton's superslick floor-plan tool to choose the largest, quietest room in my base Hip & Historic King category. The information for the Hilton Aspire Amex card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

After not having much luck on the 21st floor, I headed down to 12, where I encountered an error every time, even though I added a valid credit card number. I've stayed at many "brand-new" hotels over the years — as both a product reviewer and an average Joe, I tend to seek them out. Hotels that bill themselves as historic, meanwhile, remain an occasional curiosity, if for nothing more than a quick look.

We booked the first two nights of the stay via Hotels.com, so TPG could collect night credits and 10x miles with his Capital One Venture Rewards credit card, at a total cost of $322, including taxes and fees. As one of the longest operating hotel in America, the Palmer House has an outstanding roster of famous guests including every president since Ulysses S. Grant, numerous world leaders, celebrities and Chicago's movers and shakers. The Empire Room at the Palmer House became the showplace in Chicago. During the World's Fair of 1933, an unknown ballroom team, Veloz and Yolanda won the hearts of the city and performed for more than a year. The story of downtown Chicago’s Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel is one of romance and undeniable charm. Potter Palmer was a Chicago business magnate—well-known for various endeavors, including his significant role in the development of downtown Chicago’s iconic State Street.

He plans to open a restaurant next door on Jan. 15 called Mafia for Pizza. Everyday Kitchen is part of a coworking space called Lodgic Everyday Community. The restaurant, bar and cafe opened in June 2020 on Marshall Court, and  is visible from University Avenue. General manager Bobby Frizzell said the restaurant is open for delivery and curbside carryout only. "We have not yet determined a hard date for reopening the dining room, but we can’t wait to welcome everyone back!" he said in a text. Jacobs said his parents used to take him to supper clubs during road-trip vacations and he thought his dad was so cool for eating the raw scallions.

Named after both Shaina’s grandfather and the innovative restaurateur Fred Harvey, the restaurant is truly a family affair, with Shaina leading design and business development and Joe helming the kitchen. Sam Parker, Ryan Huber and Brian Bartels opened The Settle Down Tavern in the middle of a pandemic and serve a mean burger. Parker said the bar is doing takeout and delivery, and can seat customers in the tavern and in the attached atrium under its glass ceiling.

But the menu itself offers another way to update the supper club's standards, which are essentially a who's who of classic meaty American signature dishes. The luxe entrées here included a wagyu hand roll with caviar. And because this is Vegas the inevitable Cirque-worth aerialists often spin above diners digging into the wagyu prime rib. Midwest natives Joe Papach and Shaina Robbins Papach—both alums of Michelin-starred restaurants across the country—are bringing a fresh dining approach to Madison, Wisconsin, with a celebratory nod to the past.

Royal Indian Cuisine opened in September 2019 on the Far West Side in the days when lunch buffets could be found in every Indian restaurant in town. At Royal Indian, co-owner Inderjit Kaur is  offering carryout and delivery. Jamie Hoang opened Ahan -- “food” in Lao -- inside The Bur Oak this summer after other kitchens didn't work out at the East Side music venue. Hoang said business has been "staying steady and busy with delivery and carryout." Deliveries make up about one-third of Ahan's business, Hoang said.

Jacobs was responsible for his team’s relish tray, which had chicken liver mousse, steak tartare and crudités. Kish said that legend has it that the first supper club was started in the 1920s by Wisconsin native Lawrence Frank. “That’s right, the supper club, one of Wisconsin’s most beloved traditions,” she said. Before revealing the elimination challenge, Kish said that in Wisconsin there are Friday fish fries, Saturday prime rib and, on Sundays, broasted chicken. Gulley is also known for his beloved fudge-bottom pie still sold on campus.

At its heart, The Harvey House is inspired by the Golden Era of Train Travel and the Post Prohibition boom of Supper Clubs in the Midwest. The next day, each team was given $1,000, or $200 per person, and 30 minutes to shop at the old Madison Whole Foods Market. They then got two hours to prep and cook at The Harvey House, where they would be serving not just the judges, but 40 other “local supper club enthusiasts,” who included friends and family of the “Top Chef” staff and journalists.

Superior can also describe how it compared to all other walleye my friend and I have eaten. Its crisp crust was made with an ingenious thin layer of buttery rye bread, and it was served with a horseradish sabayon, or sauce made with egg yolks and sherry. An accompanying mixture of kale spaetzle with savoy cabbage was the perfect complement. The smoked kielbasa in a blanket is served with a dark mustard jus. In October, they expect to begin offering private and ticketed events on a converted train car from the 1960s that sits on the tracks. The Harvey House is one of the most striking spaces in Madison, with one of its dining rooms built on an old train platform.

"It’s going OK around here," said Kopp, who isn't offering dine-in now. "The online orders off my website for curbside have been great," he said. A baked potato with the works ($12) as a side was modest, served with rings of white onion and long chives on top and surrounded by thick-cut bacon. The restaurant’s most expensive entrée, “true eye of the rib,” was on The Harvey House’s original menu for $75, but was $69 when we visited.

That started with work on the location itself, a historic train depot sitting in the middle of Madison that underwent a three-year renovation. There is a bar and dining room on each level of the two-story Baggage House, with some tables sprawling out onto the glassed-in train platform, overlooking an actual parked train. Murals of Wisconsin barns and pastures stand in for a supper club's traditional bucolic view and take you on a simulated Midwestern road trip. The restaurant received more national acclaim this year as a host restaurant on season 21 of Bravo's Top Chef. Cheftestants were challenged with making dishes inspired by Wisconsin supper clubs and judges tasted the dishes inside the iconic Harvey House train car. In the early to mid 20th century, supper clubs — drinks, dinner, and entertainment packaged all in one family-owned venue, often on the outskirts of town — were all the rage throughout the Midwest.

Our meal in the downstairs glassed-in dining room started with two dinner rolls that were warm, dense, a touch sweet and sprinkled with sea salt on top. At the judges’ table dinner, Miller said, “Supper clubs are very big in our family,” then looked across the table at his wife, Kristine Miller, who agreed. “When you add that all up, does anyone know what that becomes? The chefs cooked at stations on the rooftop with the Capitol as a backdrop.

All the classics are here, and they’re poured to perfection. From a pre-dinner martini (with an ice-cold promise) to their whiskey sour (a drink that I can confidently say is the best I’ve ever had), the cocktails at The Harvey House are a perfect start to your evening. Of course, if you prefer wine or beer, there is no shortage of either.

Garibaldi Mexican Restaurant opened June 1 on Butler Street, close to the Capitol Square. Erik Francisco Doroteo, whose father, Felipe Francisco Juan, owns the restaurant, said business has been OK. "We have more new customers coming in, some coming in once a week," he said. "We have some slow days, but more people are getting to know us." Erik said the restaurant is seating inside at 25% capacity with tables spaced six feet apart. The Harvey House, which opened July 20 tucked into the Madison Train Depot, behind Motorless Motion Bicycles on West Washington Avenue, takes some menu items from the supper clubs of old and elevates the preparation. Joe Papach and Shaina Robbins Papach spent three years creating The Harvey House, which they're billing as a modern-day supper club.

The finishing touches are being put on the renovation of a retired train car from the 1960s, which will host private parties starting in October. If the meal doesn't start with a relish tray the size of a tractor tire, you're not at a bonafide supper club. In the kitchen, Papach focuses on regional flavors and continental classics, driven by French technique. Yes, there’s a relish tray, but it’s not a standard rendition. They will always rotate seasonal crudités and other snacks on the shareable board.

She also held a leadership role in the Edible Schoolyard founded by Chez Panisse’s Alice Waters. The restaurant's "true eye of the rib" is served as three medallions with a bordelaise on the plate. Its presentation was dramatic and beautiful, with a food runner pouring the broth over small pieces of cherry tomato, melon and cucumber already in the bowl. For the vegetable consommé, juice from the vegetables is strained through a cheesecloth. Shaina later told me that the current version includes deviled eggs with trout roe, smoked sturgeon, vegetables — some from the garden of the couple’s West Side home — and a ranch mousse.

I realize beef prices are skyrocketing, but by comparison, L’Etoile’s ribeye is $55. If you think it’s all cheese curds and walleye, you’re wrong. Starring on the "Supper Club" episode are, from left, Tom Colicchio, Kristine Miller, Tory Miller, W. Kamau Bell, Gail Simmons, Shaina Papach, Joe Papach and Kristen Kish.

The winning chef was Charly Pierre, chef/owner of Fritai, a Haitian street food restaurant in New Orleans. His dish had fingerling potatoes with honey and tomato chèvre and roasted pepper creole sauce. Hoping to open their Harvey House in 2019, they had to wait out the pandemic and shift the big debut to this summer. The pandemic has forced many of us to re-discover our own regional culinary traditions, as borders were closed, and the extra year of gestation helped Joe and Shaina refine their updated take on a Wisconsin supper club.

In fact, we start forming memories from the time our nervous systems become operational, about three months before we’re born. For example, newborn babies recognize their mother’s voice, and they can also recognize familiar songs or stories that were played to them in the womb. For example, I once stuck a key in an electrical outlet and had a shocking experience. But I don’t know if it’s a true memory, because I’ve heard my mother retell the story so many times.

Memorial services are held annually on June 1 (her birthday) and August 5 (the date of her death). Monroe’s crypt is easily distinguishable from the others in the wall thanks to the discoloration caused by lipstick marks frequently left by fans.

That's what the Democrats did when a motion to vacate the chair ousted the last Republican speaker, Kevin McCarthy, last fall. Greene had vowed to press her challenge after Johnson announced a strategy to pass $95 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan earlier this month. About two-thirds of that money was for Ukraine, an issue Greene had called her "red line" for moving against the speaker.

Luminaries such as Howard Hughes, Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, Bette Davis, Carole Lombard, Cary Grant, Winston Churchill, and Gloria Swanson all spent time at the massive estate at one time or another. Known as the "Father of the Port of Los Angeles," Phineas Banning built this historic residence in 1864, several years after he founded the town of Wilmington. The 23-room Banning House is widely regarded as the finest example of domestic Greek Revival architecture in Southern California. The house interiors have been carefully restored to their original Victorian beauty - 18 rooms are open to the public.

But probably none of us has a consistent and more or less continuous life story to tell before adolescence. “This townhouse has been our cherished home for decades,” Sonja said in a statement. “In addition to raising my daughter here, we entertained heads of state, royalty, luminaries and Fortune 500 CEOs. Many memories were made over the years, including hosting my daughter’s friends from boarding school and university, and so many noteworthy moments were filmed by NBC for Bravo and Peacock TV." On that list of the 10 longest-serving speakers, seven are Democrats. Most of them served in that long stretch when their party held the majority for four decades.

An understanding of story structure is an important precursor to literacy, and children who engage in elaborative reminiscing with their caregivers learn to read faster and better. As I’ve argued in other posts (here and here), memory isn’t about recording the past. Rather, it’s about making predictions to guide our behavior. You don’t know why—you can’t recall the time when you were two years old and Aunt Lucy’s poodle knocked you down and licked your face. Unless family members witnessed the event and told you about it later, you’re unlikely to remember it.

Harvey House Transforms a Madison Train Station Into a Supper Club

Book your own completely private space with separate entrance. Contestants drew knives to break into two teams of five responsible for making a relish tray, a fish dish, chicken dish, beef dish and a dessert. Kish asked if any of the chefs had been to a supper club. Only Jacobs, a Chicago native, who moved to Milwaukee in 2011, raised his hand. Walking into The Harvey House, especially on a snowy winter evening, feels both special and familiar. The drinks, and the gorgeous bar set up, mirror that feeling.

This Wisconsin Restaurant Is Reviving the Midwestern Supper Club Tradition — and It's Housed in a Former Train Station

Joe had done a serious cook's tour, moving from New York's Gramercy Tavern and San Francisco's Quince to a six-year tenure at The French Laundry in the Napa Valley. Shaina, after a stint at Chez Panisse, opted to combine her interest in cooking and teaching, working with Alice Waters on The Edible Schoolyard Project. To tackle this considerable undertaking, they teamed up with Brooklyn-based Home Studios on the restaurant design and consulted with Tim Harrison, who revamped the kitchen of The French Laundry. And they tapped local artisans to dial in the details, like Jessica Niello-White, whose artwork is built into the archways and depicts the Wisconsin landscapes of yesteryear. Ken Kopp IV renovated his former New Orleans Take-Out location on Monroe Street in one month and turned it into Lorraine's Cafe, which opened in late January.

She says they have been turning the question around on guests, asking, “What does a supper club mean to you? For others it’s certain dishes that taste like the ones from their memories. Some say a supper club isn’t a supper club until it has a few decades under its belt. Knowing they wanted to open their own place, the couple moved back to the Midwest in 2018, and spent time scouting the perfect location. They found it in the form of the Madison Train Depot, one of the best-preserved examples of the city's 19th- and 20th-century railroad history. The pandemic delayed the couple's plans by a few years, but in summer of 2021, The Harvey House finally opened its doors.

This week they opened Harvey House, transforming a portion of an old train station into an ambitious, modern supper club. If the feta cloud at Turk's Inn and the acrobats at the Mayfair Supper Club seem like a big leap from homey Ishnala, that's deceptive. In many ways, the soul of the supper club has more to do with how we eat than what we eat. It turns dinner into an occasion, a party, a big night out that just keeps going, from the relish tray to the splurge-worthy entrées to the lavish desserts, so that the night gets stretched out as far as it will go. And in Brooklyn, an equally unexpected setting, the Middle East meets the Middle West in another quirky take on the supper club.

Jacobs made a diced, grilled vegetable salad with fried bread and fried egg aioli with capers, fish sauce and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. “We want to see your take on one of Chef Gulley’s sauces,” Kish said, instructing them to make the sauce and pair it with the ingredients they bought at the market. Kish said that in 1949 Gulley published a cookbook of his recipes. For the quickfire challenge, contestants chose from among 10 of his sauce recipes.

Classic cocktails such as an Ice Cold Martini or Jerry Thomas Manhattan, and a thoughtfully curated wine list, foster an unmistakable atmosphere of Midwest congeniality where restaurants are once again destinations where strangers become friends. Classic cocktails such as our Ice Cold Martini or Jerry Thomas Manhattan, and a thoughtfully curated wine list, foster an unmistakable atmosphere of Midwest congeniality where restaurants are once again destinations where strangers become friends. The same note of theatricality is on display at a much newer supper club, popping up in the most unexpected place. Debuting in 2018 on the Las Vegas Strip, the Bellagio's Mayfair Supper Club won't win the approval of supper club purists but it is earnest about approximating the vibe of a more urbane Prohibition-era supper club. Granted the only wildlife on view are the party animals prowling the strip, and the nearest thing to a natural landscape are the Bellagio fountains.

Set in a historic train depot in Madison, Wisconsin, The Harvey House recreates that midcentury feeling, but with an elevated twist. The Harvey House sits near Madison’s Historic Train Depot, and the location – that vibe of combining something historical with something modern – serves as a solid foundation for this elevated dining experience. Classic Wisconsin supper club dishes like the relish tray are reimagined with applewood smoked trout dip and whipped ranch so perfectly seasoned it will warm every Midwesterners heart.

Joe (who hails from Indiana) spent six years at The French Laundry in Napa Valley, and Shaina (a Madison native) did stints at Chez Panisse and Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture. Esquire magazine writer Kevin Sintumuang praised the service and said "The Harvey House charms with Great Lakes supper-club elegance." Joe, 41, spent six years at The French Laundry in Napa Valley, California, working up to sous chef; Shaina, also 41, cooked for a year each at Chez Panisse in Berkeley and Gramercy Tavern in New York.

The menu has all the elements of what you’d see on a supper club menu, but with a top chef’s touch. Throughout are murals depicting pastoral Wisconsin landscapes, by artist Jessica Niello-White. If you're planning a Midwestern road trip, you'll likely hit several adorable small towns, in addition to some of America's great cities, like Chicago, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis. If you find yourself in Madison, Wisconsin, be sure to get a taste of regional history with dinner at The Harvey House, a restaurant that pays homage to the Midwest's iconic supper clubs.

The dining hall where he served as head chef is now known as Carson Gulley Commons. Contestant Dan Jacobs, the chef/co-owner of Milwaukee’s DanDan and EsterEv restaurants, has Kennedy’s disease, a rare neuromuscular disease, that slows him down. End your night by sending a complimentary postcard to a loved one. And grab one of those hard strawberry candies on the way out. You know, the ones your grandma always kept in her candy dish.

When the Turk's Inn supper club, opened in 1934, ended its long run and finally closed in Hayward Wisconsin, Varun Kataria and Tyler Erickson, fans of the restaurant, decided to will it back to life. The Harvey House updates signature supper club dishes, drawing on Wisconsin's bulging larder (think Door County cherries to artisanal cheeses) that proved the truest test. "You want to get it right, " says Joe, "because these are the dishes your mom and grandmother probably made. But I applied what I learned over the years, taking technique from scratch, finding what makes these dishes special, and modernizing them." The Harvey House embodies the elegance of supper clubs past while still feeling like the most modern eatery in town. Its food, service, atmosphere and hospitality create an experience. Sunny Pho owner Kim Khouch cooks a wide variety of Asian dishes and does them all well.

Brian and Kim LaDow opened Skal Public House in May 2018 on Mount Horeb's Main Street in what was best known as Sole Sapori for 11 years. Brian LaDow said that business is going as well as possible. The restaurant is doing carryout, including curbside, dine-in and local delivery. Tokyo Sushi opened Dec. 10, 2019 on Williamson Street, and is surviving on carryout, co-owner Wenxin Chen said. The smoked kielbasa in a blanket ($16) was an oddity with one large, studded roll and what looked like two bookends. It tasted great, however, with juicy sausage and a hint of cheddar wrapped in a thick brioche.

Make sure to let nails dry between coats of polish. If you like the idea of 4th of July nail art more than you like actual nail art, try this one. “We’ll be seeing a continuation of the ‘natural nail’ trend that’s been very popular this year,” says Russell. “Instead of a color polish, opt for a sheer, milky polish to add a ‘your-nails-but-better’ look. After your nail polish has dried, add tiny pieces of foil for a dramatic look, or paint on small flowers, hearts, or stars in red, blue, and a shimmery shade. Use press-on nails for a pro-quality manicure.

Paired with a bold red lip, this manicure is a stylish addition to any Independence Day beauty look. Swap it out for taupe polish and you'll be able to create your own take on a patriotic nail look. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you can stick to blue on your nails and pair it with a bold red lip for a fully patriotic look. Navy tips lined by negative space and thin red lines make for a modern French design we can't take our eyes off of. A negative-space star design will be right up your alley.

Sleek Stripes

Don’t worry that you’re overdoing the nail art on this one. Since last fall, artistic nail designs have been huge, and they’re still going strong. These designs tend to be bold, abstract, and like little works of art. This particular example uses negative space and swaps out the traditional white of the Fourth’s red, white, and blue for a pale blue-gray hue. To get the look, paint half your nail with a dusty blue shade. Then add a red angled tip to the nude half, followed by a bright blue swipe on top.

Checkered and Cheery

Regardless of which category you fall into, we have some of the best 4th of July nail designs you can try this year. Stripes and stars are iconic symbols of the American flag and make for the perfect 4th of July nail design. Make sure to wait till your nails are dry before applying the stickers and designs. I love how you can take elements of the American flag for each nail. Red and white stripes on one nail, blue background and white stars on another, even red stars on a white base. All of these flag-inspired patterns work together for a great July 4th manicure.

Omg, how adorable are these creative little nails? It is the gist of the entire holiday on nails. French tips, no matter how beautiful they look (to me especially), are old news for some.

Midnight Blue with Twilight Stars

This 4th of July, be bold with your patriotism and express your love for America with a fun and festive manicure. If you can’t even draw a star on paper, let alone with your nondominant hand and a nail polish brush, use a nail sticker instead. These little star and French tip designs are a fun interpretation of the classic stars and stripes. Try the multicolored look with all reds for Fourth of July instead.

We love that this white and blue flower power manicure is perfect for the entire summer. Shine bright with these pink nails featuring gold star stickers, which feel celebratory long after the holiday is over. Goodbye shiny gel manis, you're taking the backseat for now. Red, white, and blue are the colors of the American flag and the perfect choice for patriotic 4th of July nails. This manicure is full of cute 4th of July nails ideas! Any one of these designs would make great accent nails if you wanted to just choose one and do the others in solid colors. “Fruit and bright colored nail designs are also a BIG favorite for July 4th! Pair the two ideas together with your favorite summertime fruit in complementing polish colors—like pink and green for a watermelon design.

This colorful mani proves you don't have to stick with the traditional hues for your nails to skew patriotic. With bejeweled accents crafted into stars, your Fourth of July manicure will really shine when the sun hits it. Mix all summer’s most iconic prints — gingham, stripes, and cherries — on one hand to really ring in the holiday. Navy nails are really a staple you can rock well beyond the Fourth.

We see a perfectly patriotic manicure theme coming our way for the 4th of July and beyond! Some utilize our favorite spring nail colors, while others are all new for the big day. If you're like us, you'll find any excuse to get a little festive with your nails.
